Drawing or Writing

notesketch

What comes first, drawing or writing? I know another question that sounds very similar to that. As I am writing this post, I am also drawing. I am also eating, having some coffee, checking the comments and likes, the pictures and postings on social media, and talking to my wife. I like to draw and write in the morning as part of a morning routine. I don’t have to, but I like it that way. Some days are very busy specially during these two weeks. Let’s go back to drawing or writing.

If I have to pick between drawing or writing, drawing wins all the time, but I enjoy writing too. It is challenging but it is fun. I finished the book, so the blog now is just part of my own developmental process for future books, to continue public speaking, and it is also good for me to put my ideas out of my brain to save storage space. Sometimes the inspiration for writing hits before drawing does, sometimes they come together, sometimes drawing knocks at the door first. It varies.

The sketch I’m working on as I write this is already providing a path for the next post. I like when that happens. Either way developing discipline in what you love is very important for improvement no matter what it is. If you are passionate about something you will pursue it. Natural raw talent can only take you thus far, but practice and commitment makes it part of who you are. There is no need to practice all day or stop enjoying other things in life. That will turn you into a slave and take a way the fun of it.

Teaser Trailer

Reviewing the book makes me feel like I’m working on making a movie. Years before the movie comes out in theaters they give us hints of what the movie is going to look like. Today I want to share with you something like a teaser trailer of the book. Seems like this concept emerged during several conversations in the past few days and I would like to make you part of the conversation as well. You are more than welcome to leave your comments as always. Like in a teaser trailer, I can’t give away too many details or the context in which the scene develops in order to create interest and expectation.

In the garden that bond between God and man, and between man and nature grew. The woman came along and made the bond stronger, adding not only a companion, the perfect help, and a lover, but also camaraderie. Man and woman shared the human experience. They walked with God in the garden. They talked to Him. They worked together to rule the earth and manifest the authority given by God. Paradise was not just a place. It was a place where people enjoyed the perfect relationships with God, nature, and among themselves.

Things changed drastically when man and woman fell for the oldest lie of all: “You can be like God”. Hiding and covering with leaves of shame, making believe they are covering their nakedness, both man and woman face a new reality. Their nakedness remained. Being naked was not an issue before. Why is it an issue after the fall? Why being scared of that voice they knew so well? That voice comes from the One who walked with you in the garden. In the confrontation all bonds were broken. Humans decided to focus on their own selfish desires rather than preserving the relationship they had with God, which gave them also the opportunity to maintain the perfect relationship between them, and with nature.

I hope you enjoy this teaser. I’m looking forward to your comments. I honestly can’t wait to complete all the details for this book and to present the art collection with it. I am having fun already.

Relate Humanly

I enjoy talking to people even when I don’t know who they are. Someone said that strangers are friends you haven’t met yet, or something like that. It is interesting to observe, and figuratively speaking, read a person through simple conversations. We all have a story and each of our stories are or could be interconnected somehow. As you read this our individual stories crossed paths. Paying the cashier at the grocery store and making a simple gesture of acknowledging that person joins the stories together. A simple ‘good morning’ can make a great difference in the life of a person.

Some people is unconsciously waiting for someone to acknowledge their existence beyond a societal function. Some people is hungry for a kind word to remind them of their value as human beings. Someone out there, unknown or known to you, is expecting for you to get your face away from the cellphone for an opportunity to be really social and to expand your network. Talk to people. Listen to people. Give yourself the chance of an interesting conversation and the possibility of new friendships, or simply the opportunity to relate humanly again.

People build walls to protect themselves from being hurt. The scars from the past pushed them to not trust people, to not let them in. People live hurt and hiding behind those walls. However, with time those walls they built begin to suffocate them, to asphyxiate the soul. Kind words and kind gestures can make a person feel alive again inside. A conversation can be that trojan horse that goes inside the walls, but not for destruction, but for healing. Kindness restores broken lives.

March Madness

Can you believe it is March already? It feels like it was yesterday we were saying goodbye to 2014. March madness just began. No, I’m not talking about college basketball, although I enjoy that too. Both of our kids are playing basketball too. Their schedules are madness and that is just added to all the things we are doing this month. We are going through changes and transitions. The sculpting and painting parties are more. I’ll be speaking on Online Media Tips for Artists. Seems like everything decided to happen in the same month. To add to the equation, I am turning 40 this month too.

There are times where all the blessings come together. I love to watch our daughter and how excited she gets when she gets a surprise. Is often the small things that make the big difference and make our eyes spark and our smiles stretch wide. Blessings add challenges too. There are adjustments to make, some busier days, and a lot to figure out. I think it is great. The most important thing is to be thankful. Of course, time management is important and to remain calm when things don’t go as well.

It is true that small blessings make a great difference as they accumulate. The opposite is also true. Sometimes small not so pleasant things happen one after the other and it is there where many people get angry, anxious, stressed, and can’t remain calm. It is important to recognize the signs of the snowball effect when things like this happen. It is also like quicksand: the more one tries to fight it the quicker one sinks. Remain calm! Be aware! Focus on the good things! Manage your time wisely! Be thankful!

A Sketch a Day

I use social media a lot. I have a Facebook page, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Google+, and Tumblr among others. Last week in Instagram I joined a hashtag to post one sketch per day. The hashtag is #asketchaday. Artists from all over the world with many different styles post a sketch and we all get to see. I’ve been posting sometimes more than one sketch per day. A sketch a day is a good way to develop and maintain a discipline. Although, it would be just the beginning of it. It is said that it takes 21 days to develop a habit.

10516669_10150539909099956_4459567401894699820_n-2At the moment I am going to some life transitions and my time in the studio was reduced to taking care of other things. However, forcing myself to draw daily not only keeps me connected to a studio like habit but also is a chance to connect to my artistic roots and to develop ideas for the future. Drawing is also a form of study. It helps me understand the figure a little better while I can continue improving my technique.

10361564_10150542051959956_6402271108329146029_nDrawing is also a lot of fun. It distracts the mind from the daily madness and relaxes the senses. It also sharpens the eye-hand coordination. “Practice. Practice. Practice…” its what I tell people. Of course, it is all about having fun with it too. Interestingly, I received messages and comments of people who identify with this drawings and feel connected to them. Specially women who find emotional healing in art. That is very good to know. It is inspiring, encouraging, and motivating.
